Slugging it out

·291 words·2 mins

I was trying to make things easier for you, my completely real human reader, when I learned about slugs.

If like me, you didn’t know, when you are blogging with hugo if you don’t have a slug in your frontmatter, then the URI for the page when it is generated is taken from the folder name you stuffed the post in. If you use slugs, then the URI will use the slug. That means this page should have a URI like cacophonyoffailure.com/posts/slugs instead of how my earlier posts all have URI’s like cacophonyoffailure/posts/2026-10-05_slugs.

Considering I claim to be a security professional, publishing a dirbuster map for my blog is a bit of a derp. 🤦

🗳️ - QUIZ:
#

I am not going back to add slugs to each page because:

  • a) I am lazy - so I will add slugs if I need to fix something else anyway
  • b) It will change the edited dates for minimal value, since the content didn’t change
  • c) It will cause noise for Silver Badge and anyone else who is using the RSS feed
  • d) A, but deluding myself that b and c are valid reasons too.

Sorry for the delay on the Edgeshark portion, I’m doing WWHF remotely this year, so their content kicks off around 15:30 my time and goes until midnight. I ran into a few issues when I tested the previous steps on NotMyMachine™️ and needed to troubleshoot which pushed my plans back a bit.

Full disclosure, on a completely clean ubuntu install, I can’t reproduce the error. So if anyone isn’t seeing the topology once you deploy the lab, share your errors in the comments and maybe I can figure out the issue.
